Balmain

Historic Harbourside Village

Balmain is a beautiful historic harbourside village and one of Sydney’s most fascinating and visited suburbs. A vibrant village that the locals well love. A simple ten minute ride on the Sydney ferries from Circular Quay is all it takes to step out of the city and into this somewhat artistic, eclectic community, a blend of yesteryear and modern day living. In fact, this was a town of shipyards, factories and working mens institutes years ago. A far cry from the village of today.

Possibly one of the most affluent city suburbs, many writers, artists, and entertainers call this home. With lots of boutiques, cafes and good old Aussie pubs it makes for a great day out on the harbour. Take a walking tour and enjoy the offerings. If you’re coming by ferry (highly recommended) simply walk up Darling Street after alighting and you’ll discover a wonderful blend of old world heritage and modern day charm. The City of Leichardt kindly provide two different walking maps. To view and download a free PDF walking tour map click here

Brousing the shops you can find recycled art and contemporary bitz and pieces. Visitors come from all over Sydney to attend the markets held in the church grounds every Saturday and who knows… you might come away with the very thing you’ve been looking for.

This village has its working class history on display in the back streets. Architecture of the 1800’s and 1900’s prevail. There are many heritage buildings listed on the register of national estate. These include the Fire Station, the public school, Echange Hotel, Watch House, The Thames Street Ferry Wharf and shelter amongst others like the Terraces in Queen st and the Presbyterian Manse, Church and church hall in Campbell St.

Take a stroll down to Elkington Park in Fitzroy Avenue to view Australia’s oldest swimming pool. This pool was named after the country’s greatest olympian, Dawn Fraser. The pool is saltwater tidal on the harbour and open for swimming from October through to April. It’s also very child friendly.
