below is the avenue of figs
An easy place to visit and a lunch time escape for a lot of city workers to renew their vitality for an afternoon session. It’s effortless to find yourself in awe strolling along the Avenue of Figs. This walkway under a canopy of giant fig trees gives ample shade on a hot day and plenty of room to move also. Many daytime picnickers find the grassed areas a restful place to be, I’m sure you will too. If you are arriving by train you can alight at either St James or Wynyard stations, both are at opposite ends of the park. There's a nice little coffee shop at the s/w corner where you can indulge in a beverage or a bite to eat at tables in the shade.
Some Features Hyde Park is home to the Anzac War Memorial, Archibald Fountain and the Nagoya Gardens with life size outdoor playable chess set. The Archibald Fountain commemorates the Australian-French alliance of the First World War. There’s also the Pool of Remembrance. It’s interesting to note that in times past this area actually served as a racecourse, and then later as a sports field/cricket ground, although it’s a long way from the famed and hallowed fields of the MCG and Lords.
