Illawarra Walking Trails

A Healthy Pastime

A great way to keep fit and healthy is to spend some time on any of the Illawarra walking trails. These walks vary in length and also in difficulty but most are reasonably easy to do. Remember though if you have a medical condition you might be better of visiting the lookouts or just doing shorter flatter walks.

Walking is good exercise and many people make good use of their time by going for a stroll regularly. You can too! If you happen to be in the Wollongong/Illawarra area then we can help you find something suitable and enjoyable. Just keep browsing down the page.

the photo below represents some of the terrain and beauty you will see in the illawarra

Ascending Walks. If you are feeling healthy and enjoy a vigorous workout on an Illawarra walking trail maybe some of the ascending walks to the top of the escarpment could be just the thing for you. There are a few to choose from. I’ve done a couple of different ones a few times and its always a wonderful thing to finally reach the top and enjoy a well earned rest and take in those views.

To some, trekking is like a sport and there are those who take it seriously and make it a regular thing, every weekend you can find them trudging away on the trails. I remember doing Sublime Point one day and we run into a group of five who did the trip down and up three times. They were serious!

Explore Discover Enjoy! your way around some enchanting countryside with some of these Illawarra walking trails following...

  • Wodi Wodi Track Stanwell Park can be found half way to Coalcliff. You can follow it back around toward Stanwell Park Railway Station or take the climb to the top of the mountain. Requires average plus fitness.
  • Gibson track Austinmer/Sublime Point will take the average person about 40minutes to climb but be warned it’s almost all vertical... and rejuvenated and re-opened. Start at either end, in Austinmer Heights and walk up or from Sublime Point and walk down.
  • Bulli to Brokers Nose 14kms return is a slowly ascending track that will take you from the hairpin or elbow on Bulli Pass (look for the fire trail it’s easy to find) to the top of the escarpment above Corrimal. Of course, the walk back is easy, it’s all downhill - what do you think?
  • The Cascades Rainforest Walk Macquarie Pass National Park, located on the Illawarra Highway west of Albion Park. The park is one of those wonderful rainforests that just make you feel good. This is fantastic bush walking. The Cascades is 2kms away where you’ll find serenity as the water cascades from a height of more than 20 metres.

Flat/Undulating Walks. There’s also flat walks for those who aren’t quite up to climbing mountains. Many of these you may find around the beachfronts or Lake Illawarra.

  • Lake Illawarra Easy flat walking around Reddall Pde from the bridge in both directions. Take the lake track toward Oak Flats or the beachside and wander down toward Little Lake at the southern end of Warilla Beach.
  • Blackbutt Reserve off Shellharbour Rd Blackbutt has various undulating walking trails and is a wonderland of diverse fauna and flora. This is the largest natural bushland reserve in the Illawarra set right amongst the urban sprawl... so to speak.
  • Coastal Beach Walk is probably the most popular, you can start this walk from the bottom end of Crown Street next to the Entertainment Centre and walk north taking in Wollongong beach, Flagstaff Hill, The Harbour, North beach, Stuart Park and Puckey’s Reserve. From this point you can either return (2-3hrs) or keep heading on up through Towradgi and Bellambi to Bulli. (3-4hrs. This is an easy walk, simply following the bicycle track or for those who don't mind a little sand between their toes... follow the beaches.
