The Domain
Sydney's Cultural Park
The Domain is actually an annexure of the Royal Botanic Gardens although semi separated by the Cahill Expressway and is probably frequented more by users from the south eastern end of the CBD. As a part of Sydney's cultural heritage it forms the southern part of the 30 hectares that wrap around Farm Cove on the harbour and is looked after by the RBG Trust.

A place for the people This land in this park was once officially used as a privacy line between the Governor’s residence and the penal colony in colonial times, although roads and walkways were created to allow public access in the first half of the 1800’s. Thank goodness for that!Since the beginnings of the 1840’s this has remained a place for the people and has become a popular venue for outdoor concerts and events, not to mention large gatherings and public rallies. Today many use it as a sporting venue (such as footy and soccer) along with numerous walkers and joggers who use the roadways daily. Opposite the Art Gallery is a wonderful little landmark Restaurant named “The Pavilion” offering wonderful garden setting and skyline views of the city. The menu is complemented by food in season as well as a good wine list. They also do breakfast and lunches and sell light meals for those on the go. A weekend feature of is Speaker’s Corner. It was established in the late 1800’s as an opportunity for people to express their right to freedom of speech. Speakers Corner is a place where any person can turn up and talk on any subject matter, although is this day and age if you’re the speaker you’ll probably be harassed by others having contrary sediments.
Arty Features There are many fountains, memorials and sculptures here and these are supplied by both the City of Sydney and the Art gallery of NSW, either way they add character and ambience to the Park. There are numerous concerts held here each year and there are several open air musical programs that feature annually as a part of the Festival of Sydney. My favourite of these is the Jazz which is the first in a series of three (as seen below). Jazz is typically the second Saturday evening in January. There is also Symphony and Opera in the Domain as well that follow on the third and fourth Saturday evenings respectively. This is a top place to be in January in the summer, so if you’re around Sydney at this time of year be sure and get down there early to get a good spot as it usually fills up with tens of thousands of people wanting to enjoy the program of music.
